There are times in the life of every knitter where the yarn calculated for a project is simply not enough… but there you are, staring the pattern and the skein of yarn with dread because it may not be enough to complete the project. Well, relax! There is a solution. In today’s post we will teach you how to drop a stitch, the perfect technique when the material might not be enough.
To work this fun stitch you will need: knitting needles size US 8 (5mm) and our Pima cotton,
In this case we have used the Stockinette stitch to demonstrate the technique, but you can use it in many stitches such as garter stitch, seed stitch, different kind of lace stitches, etc.
To make this is stitch, you need to know how to do the following techniques:
- Cast on
- Knit stitch
- Yarn over
- Purl stitch
- Cast on a number of stitches multiple of 4.
- Work row 1 until reaching the desired length as follows:
Row 1: *knit 4, yarn over*. Repeat from * to * until there are 4 stitches left, knit them.
Row 2 and all even rows: purl 4. *knit 1, purl 4*. Repeat from * to * until the end of the row.
In this case we have knitted the stitch you will drop so you can locate it easily, but you can either knit it or purl it, since you will unravel it later.
Row 3 and all odd stitches: knit 4. *purl 1, knit 4*. Repeat from * to * until the end of the row.
Repeat rows 2 and 3 until you reach the desired length. End with an even row.
- When you reach the row where you will drop the stitches, work the row as follows:
Final row: knit 4, *when you reach the purl stitch, take it off the needle and unravel it until the beginning of the project, knit 4*. Repeat from * to * until the end of the row.
